When a traditional Harrods London bus parked upfront, we knew we were in for a spectacular ride. One by one, the boys got off with what seemed like uber-stylish school uniforms, one pinstripe suit after another, matching in perfect synchrony up to the last tie and cropped ankle-baring trousers. Secretly expecting a sharp deviation, perhaps in the form of the class goth or jock, to ditch the uniform and jump out in an outlandish statement-making outfit at the very end, we were left hanging as the last of the models joined the head-to-toe identical line-up. But it was then that Thom Browne’s eye for detail and its impact became more apparent; taking a British to the bone classic and turning it into performance, his collection, now in full view, read as thoroughly unsettling and sensational. Was it a boyish public school affair, or a statement on the institutionalizing effect of uniform? One thing was for sure, it did make for a brilliant end of day two of the London Collections, complete with live music and cupcakes.
