Tom Ford Menswear Spring Summer 2014 London

There’s always something seductively fixating about Tom Ford presentations. There’s the dramatic setting: the brand’s pristine, immaculately laid out London HQ, guarded by out-of-this–world elegant doormen. There’s the show format: an intimate showing of the latest collection, with no photography, flashing lights or blaring music taking attention away from the sleek cuts and fine fabrics. Then, of course, there’s the man himself: Tom Ford talking us through each look with the soft-spoken charisma and mystery that define his work, both in fashion and film.

Film, indeed, underpinned his latest show, with the sharp O’Connor jacket created for Daniel Craig in James Bond making the base of the collection. Continuing his affair with super bright electric shades from February, Ford had agent 007’s midnight blue tuxedo remade in a cocktail of colour splashes, from flamingo and fuchsia pinks to cobalt blues. Lustrous hues also covered suede bombers, chunky knitwear, swim shorts and luxurious velvet slippers, giving the Tom Ford man an altogether bolder and extraordinary (as if it was ever mundane) wardrobe.  The running thread of replacing shirts as the base for blazers and dinner jackets was also there; if last season it was ‘60s roll necks, now it was white muscle T-shirts made from Japanese cotton that peaked underneath slim cut blazers.

The presentation finished off with superb and impossibly sleek evening wear, with brand staples such as the silk jacquard dinner jacket reinvented with floral embroidery. The final model brought the collection back to black, with beautiful shawl collar, classic black trousers and a discreet, muted-toned foot brace! "And here's Igor, sporting our latest accessory; he hurt himself while playing football, so we designed these for him” Ford announced, pointing out the model’s customized black crutches complete with velvet cushioning. A man of his word, Ford clearly meant it when he said the brand caters for every facet of a man’s life. Now even Bond is covered.
