Backstage talk: Manish Arora – French knighthood

Backstage after his runway show, Manish Arora was in a joyful mood. And he had plenty of good reasons to celebrate: not only did he offer another beautifully executed and outlandish womenswear collection the Fall/Winter 2016/17 season, but he also celebrated his recent appointment as Chevalier de l’Ordre national de la Legion d’Honneur.

His latest offering included his signature style eclectic silhouettes in eye-popping fuchsia and fluo hues and hand-crafted adornments – a mysterious, Coachella flavored take on America's “bar-room belles” twisted with African and Indian references. We caught the designer backstage for a little chitty-chatty bit of interview.

On his lost highway through the dark heart of America – both David Lynch and Burning Man spirited inspirations, the theme of his collection.

On his new appointment as Chevalier de l’Ordre national de la Legion d’Honneur – French knighthood, what else?

“I am the first Indian creative to be rewarded for fashion and arts in France. This appointment is exceptional, it took a long time to sink in, and I am very glad for this special recognition! Like I said in my speech when I received The French Legion of Honor, “trust the French to find you and pick you and tell you that you deserve it.”

On being friends with his “Hell's Belles” – his special guests and muses.

“My good friends – Ellen von Unwerth, Chantal Thomass, and Debra Shaw – and people casted in the streets sported my collection on the runway. The concept of this casting was to have a great mix of different types of people, real characters, in order to create a David Lynch effect.”
