Belstaff Menswear Fall Winter 2013 Milan
Gentlemen start your engines. Belstaff is roaring in to the fashion future by taking a hard look at its heritage.
For the past year designer Martin Cooper has been trying to transform the sporty label into the luxury brand of choice for men who want to look good when they hop on their Harley or head out to the race track. Or at the very least, dress men as if they partook in such masculine and daredevil sports.
“This collection looks at the glory days of 1950 and 1960 motor racing,” said Cooper backstage as he showed off a pair of black pants lined in shearling and outfitted with zippers that shot up from the hem to the hip. Cooper did do his homework with this show. Many of the pieces felt truly authentic and tough enough to survive a life on the racing circuit. The outerwear, from the gauntlet gloves and the Trailmaster jackets, to the flight suit inspired coats were impeccably done.
But perhaps more noteworthy were the looks that veered away from all of the extreme sportswear. The epaulette shouldered suits, thick knit cardigans and button front shirts pointed to the fact that as much as this brand is looking back, it also has an eye toward the future.
