At Canali there was a lot to celebrate on Monday. The debut of the brand's new designer Andrea Pompilio. A benchmark 80th anniversary for the house. And a spring/summer 2015 collection filled with pieces that hit on many of the strongest menswear trends coming out of Milan.
Like a soothsayer with a direct line to the fashion Gods, Pompilio sent out his take on the checked trousers, suits and coats trend. He hit on nabuk as the leather treatment to try and he incorporated a triptych of the top colors of the season - lemon, orange, and fire engine red.
There was a clear push by the designer to give this august house a new lease on life with a younger customer base But the update of the brand wasn't so dramatic that it ever risked seriously alienating its current fans.
The one caveat of this collection would be in the fabric weights the designer went with. The choices looked rather substantial on the catwalk. If next summer is anything like the current one in Milan, Canali might struggle to convince clients that they are credible warm weather options.
