Hermès To Launch First Refillable Lipstick Line

For the first time in its 183-year history, luxury brand Hermès has revealed the launch of a new beauty line, starting with a refillable lipstick. The line, called Rouge Hermès, pays homage to the brand’s perfume collection launched in 2000.

The range of lipsticks, inspired by an archive of 75,000 silk swatches and 900 leather shades, will have plastic-free packaging made from the same metals used for the brand’s handbag hardware.

Crafted using natural ingredients, including beeswax and white mulberry extract, the colours of the collection will range from a deep purple to neutral rose, true reds and bright orange for a total of 24 different shades and two finishes – matte and satin.

According to a report on the Wall Street Journal, the lipstick has been two years in the making and has been carefully crafted to include a delicate custom scent. Fashion icon Pierre Hardy designed the refillable packaging. “We wanted to do refillable so we could use more luxurious materials that had their value,” explained Hardy to WSJ. “The idea is a form that’s both simple and playful enough to allow it to be done and redone ad infinitum. It’s rare for an artistic director to think about packaging over a long period and not just a one-off.”

Agnès de Villers, who runs Hermès’ beauty division, told WSJ: “Success will mean our clients feel immediately that Rouge Hermès is more than a lipstick, but an Hermès object in itself.”

The French fashion house seems to have planned a further expansion for its cosmetics selection shortly – one which will include items such as foundation and skincare products. A highly anticipated beauty launch, the decision to use refillable packaging sends a more important message about sustainability in the beauty sphere.

The collection will be available from March 4th 2020 in various Hermès boutiques and online at hermes.com.
