A group presentation can really show a designer where they stack up against their contemporaries, and Jonathan Simkhai was a clear stand out on the eighth floor of the MILK Studios womenswear group presentations.
“I want all of it,” celebrity stylist Law Roach gushed, surveying the room which had Simkhai’s designs split on two stages on opposite sides of the room. “That screams Zendaya!” he said, pointing to a knit intarsia crop top and pencil skirt look of baby blue, black and white. And indeed it did, as did much of the collection with its combination of sporty, sexy and feminine.
Cutouts, sheer and mesh made the body an integral part of the collection; forgiving these looks were not. Slivers of thigh and chest peeked through sheer panels in terry cloth and mesh skirts while the color palette stayed relatively simple. After all, there’s no need for a jolting orange or red when the panels on the nude skirt you’re wearing are blending right into your skin.
It was a strong presentation of sportswear from the young designer in an increasingly crowded space. Luckily, Simkhai has something to say.
