Carol Lim and Humberto Leon seem to be quiet homesick. But unlike their grumpy fellow complainers, they actually turned their homesickness into a resort collection full of surprises, potential – and sun. In this collection the designer duo left the Asian inspired warrior aesthetics from their previous season, for the sunny and trendy beaches of California.

“A lot of out French friends always say, ‘Oh, I'd looove to move to California!’, which makes us think that we actually miss it a lot as we grew up there. We don't take California for granted, but we miss it as much as every one else,” explained Leon jokingly during Kenzo's presentation in their headquarters.

The “Californication” theme already seen in their latest Spring-Summer 2014 menswear – think the finest surfers and skater boys from Venice – and weren't to be missed at their resort. According to Leon, their take on womenswear came with a little edge: “We wanted to pay a tribute to Kenzo Takada's take on suitings back in the days, but with a little twist. We paired sporty aesthetics with more refined elements. You'll have a pair of shorts that actually fit like a medium skirt. It's about ease, but also about more than what it looks like, it should come with couture-like finishings.”

High-waisted “carrot” pants and shorts, cropped tops and vests with hand-drawn “marker” stripes and palm tree patterns suggested a boyish, 90s style attitude, while the wet-look of neoprene, coated cotton poplins and sponge-like jerseys underscored the “California Dreaming” topic. The color palette consisting of showy bubble gum pink, peach and sky blue hues even emphasized it: think a bleach blonde – and slightly hipster-ish – L.A mermaid that just got off the beach in order to join her friends at an arty happening in Venice – the Kenzo's resort 2014 collection was just the perfect female pendant to their latest menswear showcased in Paris.

Finally, oversized dresses in chintz cotton and egg crate structures were a bold take on 3D-texture within the garment. Maybe we will see more of these intriguing fabric experimentations next season? We hope so...
