Marc by Marc Jacobs Ready To Wear Spring Summer 2014 New York

Just because you’re growing up doesn’t mean you have to turn into one of the suits, seemed to say Marc Jacobs at his Marc by Marc Jacobs show in Chelsea’s Pier 57 to a cheeky soundtrack, the very recently released Jeffrey Lewis song “WWPRD” – that stands for “What would Pussy Riot Do” (the lyrics were particularly ironic taken the industry we’re in).

Runways and racks across the globe have been full of "boyfriend this" and "boyfriend that" for her, this season Jacobs has taken the opposite tack by distilling items originally made for her and reworked them for the guys. That being said, the pink suit looked just as good on both, as did the “baby deer” taupe overcoats. Nonchalance is perhaps the best way to describe the collection he put on the runway. Pajama dressing, a bit of collegiate sports – oh, that satin and pink cheerleading dress and teddy jacket – the sparkling cosmic prints… the whimsy was mixed in with more down-to-earth basics, good enough for the office and unofficial uniforms of the fashionable set on a budget.

The sneaker was the shoe of the season, for him and her. Given the luxe treatment that they’ve been given in past years by a smorgasbord of designers, they’ve wound their way into any fashionista’s daily rotation. At Marc by Marc Jacobs, they were everywhere, low tops, high tops, snake printed, metallic... you name it, you had it.

Considering this is the last collection helmed by Jacobs himself – in the fall, British designers Katie Hillier and Luella Bartley will be showing their first collection for the brand – that bit of drawn out adolescence felt like one last –and great – party of high school life. The first day of the rest of our lives?
