Japanese designer Daisuke Obana began his line N. Hoolywood in 2002. He earned his title, ‘’Mr Hollywood’’, after a buying trip to LA. His collections are inspired by themes from films, literature, art, current events and things that strike his fancy, such as scrap metal recycling and automobile manufacturing. In 2011 a collection was inspired by an Ansel Adams photograph of Yosemite; the collection was a (chic) take on climbing uniforms from the 1940s, replete with melton coats and belt loops for attaching rope.

The Fall/Winter 2012-2013 collection was inspired by the Old Man and the Sea and Ernest Hemingway. Clad in knee-high boots with pull holes and an array of flawless cargo jackets, N. Hoolywood’s fishermen are the embodiment of casual style. Trousers are unweathered and studied, finished off with a thin rope belt; a yellow coat is fitting for a day at the marina--inside the yacht club.

The protagonist in the novel might be suited to the navy overalls with two buttons at the fly, paired with the checked blue coat lined with shearling, or a pair of cropped trousers and the neoprene sailor’s coat at the finale--but he could just as well be reading his creator in some stylized, tasteful library.
