Designer Paul Smith wants to put everyone in an optimistic mood. His vibrant collection for next summer is all about bold colors. A sartorial color wheel, if you will, that went from fire engine red and lemon yellow to more muted hues and even a few pastels. There was so much color on the catwalk - a head to toe suit in forest green, a perfecto biker jacket in peach - that it was the prints that stood out as sartorial pauses between all of the noise.

A deep rose print that slowly faded down a jacket with a structured shoulder or appeared as if it had fractured into a hundred pieces on a top was beautiful while a black and white pattern built out of superimposed x-ray images of scissors on slim pants and a blouson jacket was graphic and original.

Seasoned buyers know that when they hit the Paul Smith showroom many of the slim suits in the show will also come in what Smith likes to call his “rent payer” colors of navy blues and blacks. But there has never been a better season to show so much color. As Smith proves in this light hearted collection, the key to getting the color look right is in how you mix it.
