It’s hard to revisit the Eighties in a tasteful manner, so hats off to Sir Paul Smith. This modern, easy, visually appealing collection was a bang on trend, delivering a good hit of color therapy. Since a few seasons, the designer has been focused on big men’s wear shapes, and he continued here, composing looks out of brightly colored oversized tailoring elements including large pants and roomy coats with slightly batwing sleeves.
The color combinations – mixing deep purple, pink, red, and cobalt blue on silhouettes to create a kind of color-blocking effect - were great, with languid colored blouses with ruffle effects added a feminine touch.
There were slimmer sportier looks too and abstract artsy touches with Smith even going so far as to use the venue’s (the Tate Britain Art Gallery) architecture as inspiration for a print on metallic dresses and pants, that looked a bit off, unfortunately. What did look cool were a navy sheepskin jacket and long funnel-necked suede coat traced with graphic bands, and a graphic half navy, half white blazer that will have all the tomboys circling.
