“You can't be a modern woman if you dress like a girl, you have to dress like a man,” Paul Smith was quoting Katharine Hepburn while explaining backstage the mood of his latest collection, presented at the internationally renown Central Saint Martin fashion school in London. “I have always loved the androgynous, boyish look,” he continued, “but sometimes it's quite restricting and it is difficult to find the right balance between the elements.”
No one doubted that the designer found the perfect balance, when models strutted the catwalk in masculine silk pyjama shirts in striped prints and long straight dresses with horizontal panels in different classic motifs such as floral and jacquard. A dandy and charmingly posh look which delivers irresistible results, like the silk dressing gown or the black and white pinstripe trousers suits which reveals a delicate polka dot pattern on the back. Even the jackets are sartorial and classic, some with bright tapestry patterns, others in dark tones, worn with casually loose silk printed scarves and shoes with no heel. It's a dandy style with a touch of charming poshness, yet the pieces are meant to increase the inventiveness of the wearer in order for her to try new combinations (the pyjama shirt could easily be worn on many occasions even with just a pair of blue jeans).
Sir Paul is going back to his roots and they still prove to be truly contemporary. “It feels like me,” he stated a few times after the show and judging by the enthusiastic audience, many people would love to add some of his pieces to their wardrobe. Women be warned, it will be the guys looking to "borrow" your Paul Smith pieces.
