Designer Prabal Gurung wanted to create a collection that floated above the fashion fray.
On a smoky catwalk inside a hanger on a New York City pier the designer sent out a fast paced collection filled with pieces that melded together a sporty urban aesthetic with a highly feminine flair.
The running theme of this show was birds, or rather their feathered wings. Sometimes the idea appeared quite literally as a shadowy print on a three quarter sleeve top or down one leg of a pair of white silk sweatpants. More suggestive alternatives were gowns that sprouted asymmetrical ruffles or A-line dresses embellished with ostrich feathers. The use of multi level layers of light-weight fabrics was another way the designer tried to bring his winged ways to life.
But those designs, along with a group of abstract floral print pieces, felt like ground that this designer, and many others around the globe, has traveled before.
No, what really stood out in this show were a group of outfits in plum and stormy blue shades that came in a crackle-like metallic jacquard which looked as if they would slowly transform with age as the wearer lovingly broke them in. Strong too were the four sleeveless drop waisted dresses that closed the show. Their feathery print fabric came to life when embellished with the real thing. And they helped this show finally get lift off.
