On the last day of New York Fashion Week designer Ralph Lauren gave the fashion crowd two shows for the price of one. Or make that two for the price of trekking all the way to his show during a Thursday morning snowstorm. But the pull of Lauren is a powerful one and not a single top glossy magazine editor or fashion journalist was missing from his front row.
The assembled tastemakers were in for a Lauren treat. The designer debuted his new Polo collection for women as an amuse bouche before his signature ready to wear show. Twenty-five looks that ended up being the youthful urban yin to the main collection’s yang of adult sophistication.
First lets talk about those polo pieces. It was broken up into different sartorial stages of a young woman’s life. There she was in her mignon schoolgirl attire (with matched a slanted beret). Out on the city street in her day glow puffa jacket and beenie, trying out the whole Native American look with fringe bags, Navaho blanket coats and arts and crafts carpet motif dresses. And finally a bit of rebellious cool via “Nirvana” lumberjack plaid tops and vests and a patch covered leather biker jacket to top it all off. A look for an everyday occasion.
And so what did that leave Lauren to explore in the main collection?
Why refined glamor of course. And while Lauren might do a lot of things well, his all American style is never better then when he gives women easy and elegant pieces that just ooze luxury. In a color palette of ivory, baby pink, and dove gray the designer gave his clients a suede and cashmere cape, a simple flannel sheath with an exquisite choke collar neckline, a fluffy feather jacket, a cashmere halter dress and a sleeveless lame gown- just to name a few of the effortlessly timeless designs he sent down the catwalk.
Between the newbie Polo line and his standby signature collection Lauren looks as if he might just have something for everyone.
