There was something remarkably un-fashion about The Row this morning. As the Olsen sisters continue on their path of sophisticated wares, they seem to be courting an older generation, one that isn’t in search of the latest trends. After all, “beautiful at any age” Linda Rodin is the face of their pre-fall.
Pieces like an voluminous grey robe-coat and matching wide-legged trousers, a flowing silk dress with a high neckline had a faultless simplicity to them. One shoulder bag hung so low down the front that it could have doubled up as a fanny pack. But if anyone could make that look sophisticated, it’s these two. But even in a simple, oversized sweater in fur cashmere, there is obvious refinement in the sloping, flattering volume of the sleeves. A form of grace emanates from these silhouettes, walking in the intimate setting of the twin’s head offices. The body remains cocooned, hidden away yet sensuous – the materials are exquisite – gliding forward on the plush cream carpet.
Coming from two who have been subjected to the grueling, grim prospect of growing old under a myriad of watchful eyes, there is a definite play on timelessness, as if this were their manifesto on the topic. But as timeless becomes one of fashion’s new obsessions, they are perfectly on trend. In any case, this felt like a palate cleanser for the super-charged carrousel of novelty. Considering their success on retail floors, it’s exactly what women of all ages want; even need, perhaps.
