Topman Menswear Spring Summer 2013 London
Get on that wave! Half-way between sun-drenched California surfers and Manhattan hip Wall-Streeters comes Topman’s spring/summer offering, bursting with floral and graffiti prints offset by signature tailored blazers and shorts. The references, however, don’t stop there; from bored teenagers in ironic t-shirts and skateboard-holding rucksacks to high school jocks in midriff-baring rugby and basketball gear, it sure is hard to keep up with creative director Gordon Richardson’s subcultural reference rollercoaster - but all we know that it’s more than fun to look at. With an explosion of vibrant yellows, greens, blues, and fuchsias, the collection was full of cool floral prints and graffiti-like patterns, echoing the unrestrained creativity of American street artist Jean-Michel Basquiat who Richardson cited as his main inspiration. Still, there is an East Coast urban sophistication to more neutral trousers and jackets that made even the most daring floral bombers and tangerine-coloured summer boots seem as perfectly wearable streetwear. Pair with wave-tossed hair and sun-kissed skin, or, if staying on homeland, with one of the popsicle-coloured knitted hats, foolproof for a true British summer.
