Vanotti on Being Compared to Armani

Drops of water falling into a metal pan on the runway created a slow, smooth staccato at the Lucio Vanotti Spring/Summer 2017 show where half the models swept by silently in white socks.

Lucio Vanotti Fashion Show Ready-to-wear Collection Spring Summer 2017 Milan

Known for his minimalist urban fashions, the Bergamo native stuck to a monochrome color theme and Japanese-inspired silhouettes that drew from a moodboard of architectural elements like cubes and abstract ones like slouchy socks and garbage bags.

The collection embodied a pursuit of perfection in a classical sense and the rejection of ostentatiousness and excess.

And due to all his consistent understated elegance, some media like Vogue and the New York Times have hinted that Vanotti may one day be Milan's new Giorgio Armani. And certainly, after having been selected by Armani himself to show in his eponymous theater in January, Vanotti has the right advocates backing him.

NOWFASHION CHATS WITH VANOTTI BACKSTAGE:

NOWFASHION: What is the most important piece of this collection?

Lucio Vanotti: The kimono…which was presented in new and different ways, like in a jacket for example.

NF: Why are there always simple architectural elements that inspire your collections?

LV: To convey a sense of breath and breathing.

NF: Why is there a black trash bag on your moodboard?

LV: They developed a series of bags that were in black and white vinyl that were inspired by the shape of trash bags

NF: You are from Bergamo, a city rich with Gothic and Venetian monuments. Do you feel at home in Milan?

LV: There is a lot in Milan. The city and the buildings and the architecture of Milano are very close to my personal style. It is also culturally in-line with who I am.

NF:How about the fashion designers here? Do you feel like you have something in common with them?

LV: There are different points of views here – even opposing views. It's important to have a mix.

NF: Let me be more specific... How do you feel when people compare you to Armani

LV: It’s a compliment, and I like the aesthetic of Armani. But I also think that it is all too easy to say someone ‘seems like’ or ‘is close to’ someone in order to communicate or describe a newcomer in a simplified way. The new artist, actress…it is easy to describe someone using the example of someone who already exists.
Anyways the comparison makes me feel honored.
