Who has brought the Wild Wild West to Antwerp? Veronique Branquinho has! But don't get me wrong, Branquinho's cowgirls turned out to be sophisticated Belgian ladies - nothing to do with the 'howdy partner' attitude. In other words, the Belgian designer perfectly incorporated an imaginative story into her sleek autumn-winter 2013/14 collection.

“I played a lot with ethnical influences this season,” confirmed the designer after her show. “You'll find American cowboy looks, but also African inspired bracelets and a Scottish influence, provided through shetland fabrics and tartan,” added Branquinho.

This said, the designer remained faithful to her Antwerp-made minimalism. Her felt cowboy hats, studded detailing, ocelot fur and a few eye-popping hints of apple green and iridescent yellow, were the only slightly eccentric elements that were allowed on the catwalk. If you'd put the styling and accessories aside, you'd find the very clean and practical silhouettes, for which the designer is reputed.

Turtlenecks were paired with flared pants and fitted pencil skirts, while shirt dresses came with fur applications on sleeves, next to mohair overcoats and further drop sleeve fur coats – most of the outfits being accessorized with a multitude of wooden bracelets. The color palette evolved from shiny cream and camel hues to taupe, and ended with white and eggshell.

This season, Branquinho put a particular emphasize on dominant volumes in the back, as one could tell from the silky capes that were adorning her tube tops. "I like the idea of a strong, slightly masculine yet very elegant woman,” added the designer. The female interpretation of James Brown's “It's a Man's world” that accompanied the finale perfectly underlined her vision.
