As birds chirped sweetly on the sound track Vivienne Westwood sent out a collection that had a sweet romanticism about it. The idea behind the show was a summer picnic. And as Westwood is a well known supporter of the environment the theme seemed more than fitting. But it also felt familiar. In fact some of the best pieces in the collection, the white shirt covered in splotches of spilled wine or the grass stained pants, were recycled prints from past shows. In fact most of this collection felt like it was trying to force the ensembles into the concept using accessories like metallic bug pins, straw hats and hand painted shoes to link the looks.
But if the collection did not have a cohesive message, the Westwood style is so distinctive and recognizable that it honestly doesn’t really need one. Fans of the brand will be happy just to know that the designer is still sending out high waisted drop crotch pants. Here suits still come cut in outrageous check patterns and the asymmetrical lurex cardigans have not been forgotten.
The collection was a fun romp but just like many a summer picnic, it will soon fade from memory as the demands of the urban work environment take hold.
