Vivienne Westwood Ready To Wear Spring Summer 2013 Paris

You really had to want to see the Vivienne Westwood collection this season. The designer put on her show inside the British Embassy in Paris. This meant having photo id, waiting in a long line to gain entrance, and going though a security gauntlet just to have the privilege of waiting over forty-five minutes for the show to start.

With that kind of build-up, hopes run high that the show will be worth all the hard work it took to come see it.

This season Westwood was in a revolutionary mood. Both in the style of her show which had a French Revolution vibe with all of the puffed-up wigs, corseted gowns and lopsided crowns on display. And then, of course, there are the designer’s revolutionary tendencies when it comes to protecting the environment and promoting climate change awareness.  In fact, it would be hard to find a better example of the power of upcycling than this show, which had been titled Climate Revolution.

It was as if Westwood had pulled out all the bits and pieces of fabric she had in her studio and any left over adornments from seasons past and slapped them together into a collection. A collection that looked very much like it too had been recycled from a few of Westwood’s previous shows. All Westwood's old standbys were there- the high platform shoes, the loud prints, the buster dresses, the oddly shaped outfits and the frayed edged lurex knitwear.

The collection was supposed to be about a woman’s wardrobe that had been built up over time as she traveled around the world. And there was defiantly a globetrotting artisanal look to the show. But, in the end, it felt like Westwood’s woman had lost her way. Too focused on transmitting a message with her fashion that she forgot about trying to look fashionable.
